Cleaning and oral hygiene

Maintaining a healthy smile requires consistent brushing and flossing twice daily, but it’s important to note that these practices alone cannot replace professional cleanings. Only dental professionals such as dentists or dental hygienists can effectively eliminate plaque buildup, which is a leading cause of gum disease. To ensure optimal oral health, it is crucial to schedule regular routine cleanings with your dental provider.

Achieving a healthy smile

A dental cleaning is a straightforward procedure that safeguards your oral well-being and mitigates potential harm caused by bacteria. As per the guidance of the American Dental Association, it is recommended to schedule a dental cleaning every 6 months. However, individuals who are more susceptible to gingivitis are advised to come in more frequently, every three to four months, to proactively prevent infections. This holds true for patients with dental implants as well.

A dental cleaning serves a purpose beyond the removal of buildup and plaque. During your appointment, your dentist will conduct a comprehensive oral examination to detect signs of cavities and other significant dental issues, including oral cancers.

Optimal brushing and cleaning method

For effective oral hygiene, it is essential for patients to brush their teeth a minimum of two times daily, allocating two minutes for each brushing session, using fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, it is recommended to floss at least once every day. When selecting a toothbrush, opt for one with soft bristles, and replace it every three to four months, or sooner if visible damage or fraying of the bristles occurs. According to the American Dental Association, both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective in maintaining oral health.

There exist several techniques for achieving effective brushing. During your upcoming appointment, our dental hygienist can demonstrate these methods to you, ensuring that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
